Sian has a multi-faceted career in the arts, education and media. For the last three and half decades she has been a writer and broadcaster, working in radio, television, print and online.

She has been a presenter on ABC RN, ABC Classic and ABC Melbourne, and a regular columnist for The Age/Sydney Morning Herald. Her essays have been published in magazines and literary journals and her short fiction in a range of anthologies.

In 2014 Sian’s critically-acclaimed first book, ‘Shy: a memoir’, was published by Text Publishing. Her second book, ‘Childless: a story of freedom and longing’ was short-listed for The Age 2022 Book of the Year award.

She taught journalism and creative non fiction at RMIT University for two decades, and now runs her own writing courses online and in person for community groups, writers festivals and libraries. She also mentors individual writers.

Sian is an event host, public speaker, voice-over artist and musician. She is a graduate of the Opera Studio at the Victorian College of the Arts and was the founding director of the Victorian Trade Union Choir. She currently sings with the La La La Chorale, Colla Voce vocal ensemble and the Westgarth Ensemble.

Sian has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), a Graduate Diploma of Opera, a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, a Graduate Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing and a Doctorate in Creative Writing.
